Looking through her artwork, I am shocked that she was so undermined as an artist. Hoch being a woman probably contributed to that unfair judgment. It is truly saddening that her work was not appreciated and still even after her death. I have always wondered to myself why art and literature are not always appreciated during the artist's life. Now that I think about it, many of them write or create art rejecting ideas and beliefs of their time period. It may be a bit too vague, but perhaps the a reason why the work of artist's are not always appreciated. I usually hear of books and novels being appreciated only after the writer has passed away. That is probably because the beliefs of that specific society has been modified, so whatever the book was rejecting has come to be recognized.

Hannah Hoch Response
Hoch must have had a hard time trying to get her work out there and appreciated. Being a
woman, she most likely received less attention compared to her male counterparts. Her artwork
does illustrate her beliefs rather well though. Trying to stand up for other women, she tried to
depict the strength of them through her work. This is part of the reason why I chose this picture
by her. There is two men on each end and two women in the middle. However, she placed a face
that does not go along with the layout of the art. Not to mention she is facing the other way with
her mouth open, almost as if she is going to say something. I think this was Hoch's way of
illustrating a change coming with the way women were treated. The way the picture is, is so
simplistic, yet it really says a lot.
