Duane Michaels et al - PK

I’m not sure how I feel about photomontages of this sort. A lot of the images I felt were too crowded and too cluttered. However, I still appreciate the stories such images can create. The overlapping images have each a different subject and a different story to them, which with all the overlapping creates a sense of passed time and history. A good example is the fossil and city image. That fossil could have been a part of that landscape long ago, and now there are skyscrapers and all different types of industrial buildings. It makes me think of all the other things this are could have been during the different generations that lived there throughout time.

I like the idea of identity being portrayed in different layers of the picture. El Lissitsky's self-portrait is a prime example of how that works. The hand and eye being connected makes it appear as if the artist uses both his eye and hands to create works of art. The hand and eye coordinate to create something that can send a message and can affect people.

I picked this picture by Rachael Koscica that is a self-portrait. The name is quite interesting; she named it “Sweet as a Rose.” This is an example of a picture I do like; it’s aesthetically pleasing and not very cluttered with multiple layers. The colors are tremendous, very vibrant and they fit in well with her picture.

  1. I completely agree with your statement about not liking these pieces. This type of work is definitely not my style either. I find some of the pieces hard to focus on because I feel a little overwhelmed by the massive amount of images in the piece. However, the craftsmanship is still amazing which is what I appreciate most about these pieces.
