I enjoyed reading about the influences on
the work of Hannah Höch and even more, browsing through her pieces. Again, I
notice that yet another artist’s motivation is a movement for a change. I had
never thought of collages having meanings and carrying messages as my whole
life they were really just something creative. Finding out more information
about the origins and influences behind them, I now see that they indeed do
tell a story. The works of Hannah Höch even reminded me of history texts but in
a form of art.
At the same
time, though I see what her works are trying to say, it seems more of her
summarizing the story but not exactly protesting something as John Heartfield’s
role was. In a way, it seems like they complement each other for that reason as
they lived through the same events in the world history and are of the same
origin, Germany.
I
personally enjoy collages and actually do encounter them in a lot of modern
media and advertising. As different kinds of things affectively get the message
across to different audience, personally I find collages intriguing and
affective. I find them not only in media but also in a lot of business
presentations. Many times I feel like even the creator of them does not realize
they are being artistic and know the actual history behind their work. Learning a
little about Hanna Höch’s work is making me more aware of collages and what they represent.
I am including a picture of a collage made
for an interior design presentation. I briefly studied interior design in high
school and made plenty of these myself. Never had I thought of it as a work of
art or a statement, but it just hit me that it was a message I was trying to
get across, a representation of my ideas and not simply objects put together.
