Manuel Mandujano: Hannah Hoch Response

Hannah Hoch was an interesting woman that took major steps in the art world in regards to her photomontage work. Hoch got acquainted with Raoul Hausmann, became his lover and the first woman to join the DADA movement. While being the first woman to join the DADA movement is a big step for women, Hoch was still seen as beneath the male members of the movement in regards to art quality and status. That being said, time has proven that it was Hannah Hoch’s artwork that sparks the most interest, making her reputation and status as an artist greaten more now than when she was alive.

Hoch’s art demonstrated both protest for World War 1 and the advancement of the rights of women. Hoch was underappreciated during her day, by both the males in the DADA movement and society. That being said, most of Hoch’s art portrayed the “New Woman”. One of Hoch’s most intriguing pieces of art is titled Da Dandy, where she forms the profile of a man using fragments of female heads.

Hoch took big steps in both the world of art by her photomontage and collage work and in the advancement of women’s rights and power in the themes of her art. Hoch is inspirational in that fact that even though she was unappreciated in her time and her work was seen as lowly because of her sex, she continued to advocate for the art world and for woman.

  1. I agree with you that Hoch took huge steps in the world of photo-montage and collage work. I think she did so even when the people in her life were not so supportive of her. I think she has inspired so many people who do collage work. Even today people will undoubtedly look to her work for inspiration within their own work. She was ahead of her time because most women would not have been as strong as she was.
