What caught my attention while reading a little bit of John Heartfield's biography is the fact that he was a German himself while bashing and criticizing the Nazi and Hitler's Third Reich Party. His work of art was extremely satirical, and I'm surprised he did not get shot on the street, or sent to prison, at least, for his rebelliousness. He also produced his political artwork while he was working for German companies like the UFA, and he didn't get exiled out of the country for his protests (he must have been good a running away).
Since the Dada movement consisted of artists protesting against the war, greed, and the corrupt powers, his art was the complete opposite from the militaristic and racist propaganda that was floating around Europe during both World Wars. The fact that BOTH of his parents fled the household and left four children alone could be the initial reason as to why he was angry and against the socialist party. Maybe his Dada art was his way of sarcastically saying "thank you" to the German government for taking away his parents.
I chose this image because it clearly shows what Heartfield was all about. He was anti-socialist, who held this hatred over the greedy German government, Nazi party, and Hitler's Third Reich. He knew that what his country's dictator was doing, was morally wrong. With this photo he shows that Hitler is watering, giving birth, to this tree of evil life that is going to kill over 6 million Jews and many, many more innocent people who he thought were not up to his cultural standards.
