I think comics are an interesting form and combination of art and text. For a long time, and still today, comics are used in newspapers as not only "mindless" entertainment, but also as a way for comic artists to send political messages. I think it's also interesting that Chris Ware refers to his books as serialized comics as opposed to graphic novels. He even compares himself to Dickens and Dostoyevsky. I also think it’s interesting that Ware wasn’t initially going to have any dialogue or any words in his comics but now he has a lot of dialogue and writing. It’s intriguing that he says he lost a human connection to his comics when he didn’t have writing in his work.
I really liked Ware’s comics in the “Superpowers” article. I like that he chose to put the comics in black and white because it makes everyone seem like they are the same. What I mean by everyone seeming the same is that Ware colors the superheroes in black and white and not any other color, so they match the rest of the people in the comic strip. I like that he humanized superheroes, which I think was the point of the prompt. I also appreciated that he provided a pseudo-soundtrack to the comic along with the timing of the scene, Ware makes the comic seem like more of a movie. It’s very creative and different.
The photo I chose was of a simple, black and white comic strip that Ware made. I chose this particular comic strip because I appreciated the simplicity of the strip in black and white. I like colored comics, but I like the simplicity of the black and white.
I like the photo you chose because it is another great example of Ware's work. He really makes the view think about the emotions and actions the characters are portrayed doing. Without the use of text Ware is able to grab views attention which is amazing.
ReplyDeleteI like how you appreciated Ware's usage of black and white. I think his colors are essential to his works as well, and are what makes his pieces so thought-provoking and different. He truly is capable of evoking ideas and emotions through simple cartoon drawings and it's not only impressive but slightly surprising. I love the photo you chose because it strikes the right amount of balance between all of the things you liked about the article. As you said, Ware makes his cartoons seem like movies. This one could definitely be one short, adorable little movie.
