Chris Ware

Chris Ware focuses on the images within his artwork as opposed to the text.  He even points out that part of his text is poorly written.  I like that he can admit that he is a poor writer and is better at expressing through drawing.  He talks about how he tried to express emotion in some of his work without the use of text.  He tried to see what he could get out of simply drawing instead as opposed to forcing viewers to read the emotions.  He also talks about how his characters do not feel real to him.  Only the sister feels real.  Even his experience with his real father does not make his character seem real to him. This kind of artwork is completely different from the artwork our class has been looking at.  He also talks a lot about being American and what that means in his interview.  I think this has had a big impact because of the American view of family.  Therefore, he uses family within his artwork.  Ware’s artwork is also inspired by comics, which is completely different from every other artist we have looked at.

I chose to use an unknown artists work because it is an interesting take on the comic "Peanuts".  The link I will provide has a small interesting article on contemporary comic artists who redo older comic covers.  I thought it was interesting but still very different than Ware's work.

  1. I agree with you in that Ware's artwork is completely different form every other artist we have looked at visually, but do you think it is that different conceptually? While we have been taught to appreciate aseptically pleasing pieces of art, I think it is important to remember the concepts exemplified in the pieces. That being said, I don't think Ware's artwork is that different conceptually.
