Chris Ware's comic art is quite unique in relation to the stereotypical perception I have of comics, but overall I really enjoyed his work. One of his ideas that really intrigued me was the way in which he sometimes used static images without words (which is very different from most comics) as an attempt to descriptively depict emotion and thought-provoking scenarios. I find it amazing how a series of pictures with slight differences can speak an entire narrative. I also found it interesting that the things that evoked the artistic parts of the pieces was emotion and strong/taboo emotion at that. Ware even said himself that, "I grew up as an only child, emotionally impaired; I hated myself, everybody hated me, etc. etc." I also really liked Ware's illustration of his comics as a composition, similar to a musical composition. He is trying to create something that holds together and gives people something to think about and relate it to their own experiences.
The piece that I chose is one by Ware that I think evokes some emotional thought. It illustrates what appears to be a lonely woman in a very large city. Despite the fact that there are a lot of people living in the city the woman appears to be lonely with her only friends as the birds she is feeding. Even though it is a simple picture, it speaks a very descriptive narrative with many different things going on at once
I love the Ware picture that you chose. This is a perfect example of what he (and you) were talking about; how images without any text or in-your-face elements can be equally if not more powerful in evoking an emotional reaction from an audience. I think maybe this is because it pushes the viewer to imagine, without linguistics, what emotions are being felt and what the world may be like for the subject. It's amazing to think of how many thoughts and feelings can't be put into words!
