Sadie Benning is an artist who made her name as a video maker during her teenage years. She first started out when her father gave her a camera as a gift to spark her interest. She then began to film her thoughts in a diary-like way sharing her deepest thoughts.
In her piece “Me and Rubyfruit” Sadie is having a conversation with herself, one part hopeful about her sexual orientation and her future, the other realistic about the rules the society infringes upon her. This creates problem within herself that she puts out for the whole world to see. It is really brave of her to showcase a moment so personal, so intimate. The whole video is very dramatic, black and white, very pixelated and with noises or music filling the background. The tracking shots Sadie does add to the drama of the video, as they are often hard to read and move at different speeds, making the audience pay closer attention to the whole experience.
The experience was definitely a deep one, it felt as if we weren’t supposed to be there listening. Her thoughts were very private and at points I was uncomfortable watching because I felt that I was crossing boundaries and hearing things I shouldn’t know about. It’s also very comforting to know that she trusts strangers to know these things about her, even though she won’t know anything about them. Sadie Benning definitely made an impression on me with her honesty and openness that is not seen very often.
