"The Crux of Conceptualism..." Response

"idea serves as 'a machine that makes the art'" (Drucker 255)

This quote truly stuck out to me. I have never really thought about ideas in this sort of sense. The notions within our heads literally are what guide us to create and/or project them into reality. I really just find this saying so fascinating; it is so true that many of us probably have not even thought about ideas in this manner until reading the article.

The way I see it, our minds conjure up any sort of idea. Then, we as people or even as a catalyst develop this idea even further by manifesting it. For example, the idea of fighting and self-defense eventually become what is known as martial arts. People use their own bodies to physically depict this idea to their audience. It is somewhat a chain of events. The idea comes to be within one's mind, then the body brings the idea to life, and finally, you have the finished product. These ideas can be produced in a number of ways, in my opinion: whether it be drawing, writing, speaking, photo shooting, moving, or cooking. The ideas can actually become materialistic through these different methods and many more. I suppose the utter simplicity is what intrigued me the most about this quote. When i took the time to actually think about what it meant, the concept of the matter just came to me.

The reason why I chose this picture by Kosuth was to present some sort of visual example of how I see the meaning behind the noted phrase. The idea of the word word is what starts it all off. Through this, we develop sentences, phrases, and paragraphs. And from these, comes the actual art in a way that people can comprehend sensibly. From the idea of words, various forms of art came to be such as poems, spoken word, and stories.

  1. I really like the analogy you use with martial arts. It is really interesting case in which the idea creates the "art," and what was once abstract becomes material and defined.

  2. There is so much beauty in your sentence about people using their bodies to convey an idea in martial arts. It reminds me of dancing, as well. I like the idea that art can be interactive.

  3. It is great that it is a quote that intrigues you. Reading the article was a bit painful but when something just clicks and makes sense it makes the whole thing clear. It is true that many of us probably have not thought of the relationship between art and idea in this way before. It almost created a definition for me.
